The
King Of Rock 'N' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters
This
five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present
Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important
musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple--showcase,
in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's
1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios
(where they arguably invented the very notion of rock &
roll) through his 1958 Army induction. |

Elvis
Presley
by Pamela Clarke Keogh
In
this slim illustrated volume, icon biographer Keogh (Audrey
Style; Jackie Style) presents an homage to Elvis from a unique
perspective, explaining how his inimitable style-not just
the way he dressed, but also the way he spoke and behaved-influenced
the music and the sensibilities of Americans... |
The
Elvis Treasures
by ROBERT GORDON
On
October 3, 1945, ten-year-old Elvis Presley climbed atop a
chair to reach the microphone and performed the song "Old
Shep" for a crowd of several hundred at the Tupelo fair,
coming in fifth place in the talent contest. Ten years later,
the King created his first full-scale riot after an... |

GraceLand
by Chris Abani
Abani's
debut novel offers a searing chronicle of a young man's coming
of age in Nigeria during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The
vulnerable, wide-eyed protagonist is Elvis Oke, a young Nigerian
with a penchant for dancing and impersonating the American
rock-and-roll singer he is named after. |

Ed
Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics Boxed Set
With
a total of 144 songs (including repeats) and well over 500
minutes of playing time, this massive boxed set, whose nine
discs each contain between 12 and 19 performances, truly is,
as host Ed Sullivan famously said, "a really big show."
With some 20 songs between them, the two most important rock
acts of the 20th century, Elvis Presley and the Beatles, both
of whom received huge career boosts from the Sullivan show
(garnering a reported 80 percent audience share and 70 million
viewers, respectively), are well represented; so are other
genres, like Motown and '60s rock. |
Elvis
'56 - In the Beginning (1987)
This
1987 documentary is distinguished by both its smart narrative
premise and wonderful performance footage of Elvis Presley
at the dawn of his remarkable career. With the King's melodramatic
life already a familiar subject for film and print biographies,
producer-directors Alan and Susan Raymond instead shaped this
hour-long profile around the year that saw the charismatic
Memphis singer's eruption as a pop sensation. By taking that
selective path, and focusing tightly on Presley's crucial
transition to a major record deal, national media exposure,
and the first decisive steps in his subsequent movie career,
Elvis '56 achieves a unique cohesion while legitimately celebrating
a remarkable period of growth. |

30 #1 Hits [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
In
1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The
Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label
come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the
sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that
brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica
star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number
ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love"
never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down,"
despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of
the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death.. |
